Zelda The Missing Link is a brilliant fan-made ROM hack that aims to bridge the narrative gap between Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, and it does so with eerie elegance and masterful design. Released in July 2020, this short but unforgettable adventure takes place in the Lost Woods, where Link sets out on a deeply personal mission to find his lost fairy companion, Navi. But what starts as a search for a friend quickly escalates into a battle to save the world from a growing darkness.

The story is tight and compelling — rather than sending players across a vast overworld, The Missing Link keeps things focused within dense, mysterious forest locations. The haunting village of zombies, eerie ambient music, and custom environments set a darker tone that feels like a surreal nightmare version of Ocarina of Time. The emotional core of the story — Link’s loyalty to Navi — is surprisingly touching, even if many fans joked about their annoyance with her in the original game.

Gameplay-wise, the hack introduces a brand-new item with original mechanics not seen in the base game, along with a completely custom boss fight that’s visually and mechanically unique.
